I discovered BNI when making cold calls the first week I was in business. An Insurance Agent told me about the website and informed me that it was an important part of his success. Though I was a bit skeptical, I checked it out.

After spending a year in a BNI group and experiencing moderate success with that group, I took a break. Those were the slowest months of my business in the last two years. I wracked my brain trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I quickly realized that I wasn’t in a BNI group.

Shortly after joining a new BNI group, I received a referral that turned into my largest client to date. The account has a potential to produce in excess of $25,000 dollars a year and will allow me to target other businesses of that size as potential clients. Through BNI, I was able to develop the contacts and business networking resources that have allowed me to literally grow my business to the next level.

I am in my second year of BNI and the referals keep coming in. In addition, I am receiving second and third generation referals from a referral a year or two ago.
My group has the normal attrition from people moving in and out of the area, which leads to new people joining my "unpaid sales force."
I can firmly state that BNI has increased my business from myself being the "sole employee" to three full-time employees and two part time employees.
Being part of a BNI group has made me more resourceful to my business and personal clients. I am now considered the "go to guy" when someone I know personally or in business needs something.

I joined BNI in September of 2005. At the time I was a fulltime engineer. I realized a few years ago that coaching was my passion and began to pursue it during my "non-work" hours. As I picked up clients, those around me still thought of me as an engineer rather than a coach. When I joined BNI, I surrounded myself with a group of professionals who knew me only as a coach. This gave me the confidence and structure I needed to step into coaching/consulting fulltime in May of 2006.

Currently, I work with with salespeople who are frustrated by the amount of hours they put in and still not at the top of their game. Peak performers are 85% more productive that average performers, so there is a large opportunity cost for not residing in the top 10%.

I also work with leaders and organizations to increase their growth, profits and staying power. Many organizations bring in outside consultants to work "on" the business and trainers to "spray and pray" with the employees and leadership. I work in the middle, boosting the productivity, trust, and creativity of the employees and management because this is where a company's goldmine exists.

Without the support of BNI, I would have spent many more years in the wrong job. Now I get to spend my years as a "recovering engineer."

Givers Gain in Action


Kristen Caldwell has a great view on the Givers Gain theory. Kristen is a Fitness and Yoga professional in the South County Specialist chapter who frequently gets called upon to be a substitute in other chapters. In addition to being able to sub, she also gets the opportunity to promote her business. Kristen uses the contacts she makes to bring referrals back to her home chapter.

Kristen states, "I am averaging at least two referrals to give to my chapter members with each chapter I sub for. It has been working great! Next week, I have around 5 referrals to give my chapter. I have established at least a dozen new relationships that may develop into business down the road."

I was introduced to BNI over two years ago by my accountant, Donovan Anderson, in Fullerton. Like most members who have joined BNI, I knew during the first meeting that I was going to join. I had been looking for another way to increase my business. I have an automotive repair shop in Fullerton so I come into contact with a number of people every day. I have been able to actively promote the other Brea Chapter BNI members and their businesses. In return, the "Giver's Gain" concept has gone full circle and now they refer me! My BNI business contacts always trust me to take care of their referrals. Many times it's for friends or family, so I know we need to do our best for these clients. I just recently renewed my membership for 2 more years. Do I believe in BNI? You bet!

If you're like me, then you have probably learned a lot about networking from your participation in BNI, but there's always more to learn about how to use networking to expand your business.

Member Success, or MSP, is just one of the ways to deepen your networking knowledge. And it's free! For those of you thinking, "But I already went; I don't need to go again," know that SoCal BNI is using a new training booklet and new trainers...and you are a new person since you last attended. Our Executive Directors encourage us to take advantage of this FREE training every six months. Granted, most of us won't go every six months, but how about once a year for a refresher? For new tips? For a chance to network with other BNI folks outside the chapter?

Members who participate are thrilled to make great connections with other chapter members, go deeper with their power partners, get to know a new member better...

Remember, what you learn and do in networking helps you, helps the chapter and we all benefit! Hope to see you there!
